    2 Minute EBP CHallenge

    Stay up-to-date the easy way!

How would you answer this question?

What is the most effective method for patients to lose weight and keep the weight off?

    a.  General practice one-on-one counseling.
    b.  Pharmacy one-to-one counseling.
    c.  Group-based dietetics program.
    d.  Weight Watchers.

The correct answer is "d" Weight Watchers.

View the YouYube video response here.

Losing weight is difficult, and keeping it off is even harder.  Many people can begin a diet program but get discouraged early on and gain the weight back, often even more.  Finding effective weight loss solutions for our patients is necessary to help them to achieve healthier lifestyles.

In this study the authors found that all programs except one-on-one counseling resulted in significant weight loss at one year, and that patients who used Weight Watchers lost more weight and kept it off longer.  Commercial programs such as Weight Watchers were less expensive than other options they tested.  The results of this study reinforce those of other studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of programs that offer a diet plan and counseling along with group support for motivation and to encourage behavioral change.

From: Jolly, et al. (2011).  Comparison of a range of commercial or primary care led weight reduction programmes with minimal intervention control for weight loss in obesity: Lighten Up randomised controlled trial.  BMJ, 343, d6500.
