The three-DVD course is presented stepwise through the 16-certification criteria using didactic and experiential methods.

Criterion 1
  • Understanding of the historical developments in the field of caregiving that gave rise to the concept of compassion fatigue (e.g., diagnosis of PTSD being included in DSM-III, Yael Danielli, vicarious trauma, burnout research, Beth Stamm, Charles Figley, etc)
    1. Review of the history and seminal contributors to the development of compassion fatigue

  • Ability to articulate the etiology of compassion fatigue through its two primary components: secondary traumatic stress and burnout
    1. Discussion of secondary traumatic stress and work-related stress developed through patient/client interactions

J. ERIC GENTRY PHD, LMHC, DAAETS, FAAETS, CCTP

J. Eric Gentry, PhD, LMHC, DAAETS, FAAETS, CCTP, is an internationally recognized leader in the study and treatment of traumatic stress and compassion fatigue. His Ph.D. is from Florida State University where he studied with Professor Charles Figley--a pioneer of these two fields. In 1997, he co-developed the Accelerated Recovery Program (ARP) for Compassion Fatigue - the world's only evidence-based treatment protocol for compassion fatigue. In 1998, he introduced the Certified Compassion Fatigue Specialist Training and Compassion Fatigue Prevention & Resiliency Training. These two trainings have demonstrated treatment effectiveness for the symptoms of compassion fatigue, and he published these effects in several journals. He has trained over 100,000 health professionals over the past 20 years.

Dr. Gentry was original faculty, curriculum designer and Associate Director of the Traumatology Institute at Florida State University. In 2001, he became the co-director and moved this institute to the University of South Florida where it became the International Traumatology Institute. In 2010, he began the International Association of Trauma Professionals - a training and cortication body-for which he was the vice president.

In 2005, Hogrefe and Huber published Trauma Practice: Tools for Stabilization and Recovery-a critically acclaimed text on the treatment of traumatic stress for which Dr. Gentry is a co-author. The Second Edition was released in 2010 and the Third Edition in 2015. He is also the author of the groundbreaking Forward-Facing® Trauma Therapy: Healing the Moral Wound. He is the co-author of Forward-Facing® Professional Resilience: Resolution and Prevention of Burnout, Toxic Stress and Compassion Fatigue, Unlocking the Keys to Human Resilience, and Transformative Care: A Trauma-Focused Approach to Caregiving. These books provide a new vision for trauma therapy in the 21st Century. He has written numerous chapters, papers, and peer-reviewed journal articles in the areas of traumatic stress and compassion fatigue. Dr. Gentry is a Master Traumatologist with over 35 years of clinical experience with trauma, Complex PTSD, Personality disorders, and dissociation.

He is the President and CEO of The Forward-Facing® Institute and owner of Compassion Unlimited -- a private psychotherapy, training, and consulting practice-in Phoenix, AZ.

MARTHA TEATER, MA, LMFT, LCAS, LPC

MARTHA TEATER, MA, LMFT, LCAS, LPC Martha Teater, MA, LMFT, LCAS, LPC, is a Diplomate with the Academy for Cognitive Therapy and is a practicing cognitive-behavioral therapist. She has maintained a private practice for over 27 years and has worked in primary care settings, free clinics, and medication-assisted treatment programs. Martha is a Red Cross disaster mental health manager and has been on many national disaster deployments where she provides support to traumatized people. She is also involved with the Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces to develop programs to support military and veteran families.

She has provided trainings in the United States and internationally on topics such as evidence-based treatments for trauma, DSM-5®, compassion fatigue, and behavioral treatment of chronic pain. A prolific writer, Martha has published over 175 articles in newspapers and magazines, including Psychotherapy Networker and Family Therapy Magazine. Martha is the co-author (with John Ludgate) of Overcoming Compassion Fatigue: A Practical Resilience Workbook (PESI, 2014) and (with Don Teater) Treating Chronic Pain: Pill-Free Approaches to Move People from Hurt to Hope (PESI, 2017).

JOHN LUDGATE, PHD

JOHN LUDGATE, PHD John Ludgate, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist who has worked as a psychotherapist for almost 30 years. He trained at the Center for Cognitive Therapy in Philadelphia under Dr. Aaron Beck, the founder of Cognitive Therapy, and is a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. He subsequently became assistant director of training at Dr. Beck’s Center. His current practice consists largely of treating clients referred with mood problems and/or anxiety conditions at the Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Center of Western North Carolina in Ashville, North Carolina.

John is a native of southern Ireland and obtained a master’s degree in clinical psychology from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, and a PhD from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland in 1990. In the early 1990s, Dr. Ludgate was a research clinical psychologist at the University of Oxford in England and served as cognitive therapist in several outcome studies of panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia and hypochondriasis.

He authored Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Relapse Prevention for Depression and Anxiety (Professional Resources Press, 2009) and was co-editor with Wright, Thase and Beck of Cognitive Therapy with Inpatients: Developing a Cognitive Milieu (Guilford Press, 1993). His other books include Overcoming Compassion Fatigue (PESI, 2014 co-authored with Martha Teater) and The CBT Couples Toolbox (PESI, 2018). He has written numerous journal articles and book chapters in the field of Cognitive Behavior for Anxiety and Depression. He has presented many seminars and workshops on cognitive behavioral approaches, both nationally and internationally.

Montana Social Workers: The Montana Board of Behavioral Health no longer pre-approves any courses or sponsors. Each licensee is responsible for taking courses which contribute to their competence and directly relate to their scope of practice as defined in board statute (MAR 24-219-32). Licensees must keep CE documentation for three years in case of an audit. This intermediate level self-study activity consists of 6.0 clock hours of instruction.

Pennsylvania Social Workers: The Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors accepts many national association CE approvals, several of which PESI offers.
