    Let Everyone Know the Plan

    Sunday, November 02, 2008

Let your team know what the plan is and what the payoff is.  If your team know that your goal is congruent with theirs, they will be more likely to go along with the plan.  It is important to note that a lot of times we will communicate what the plan is, but not what the expected payoff is.

Make a point of communicating the payoff to your team so that you get their buy in with your plan, whether your plan is simply the staffing assignments for today or a specific plan for a specific patient and a specific patient’s family.  It is important that you let the team know what the payoff is going to be.

You could say, for example, “if we are able to manage this staffing assignment, then we will all be able to get done on time.”  You want to make sure they know what the payoff is and show them how that is going to be congruent with their plan.  Keep in mind their plan is going to be to provide great care for their patients and to be able to get out of work on time.  So, you have to make sure that your plan fits with theirs or your team will be resistant to going along with your plan.  Your team might try to push their plan forward, at your expense.

The best way that you can get the cooperation of your team is by letting them know what the plan is and what the payoff is going to be.

    Best wishes,
