    Nursing is an Art

    Thursday, March 13, 2008

Nursing is an art, a craft of professional practice and as such we must continually work on it and develop it.  Are you on the path to personal mastery?

Many people consider nursing to be a calling, something that they were always meant to do.  Just because we were meant to do it does not mean that we can become complacent in our learning.  We need to take on an attitude of life-long learning, continually looking for ways that we can improve our practice and become better.  As the artist continues to draw or paint and practice their craft, so the nurse needs to continue to practice and improve their craft.  So the question is what have you learned lately?  What have you learned today?  Make it your goal to learn something new every day so that you can continue to improve your practice and become a better nurse.

Think about learning in terms of expanding your arsenal of knowledge and skills and think about what you do every day to research your craft.  There are many ways to continually research your nursing practice by subscribing to newsletters, by subscribing to discussion groups and listservs such as this one, by going to seminars, by reading journals, etc.; but make it your goal for life-long learning and continuous improvement so that you may develop your craft into a beautiful art.

“Criticism comes easier than craftsmanship.” -Zeuxis
